Victorino establishes foundation

PHILADELPHIA — Shane Victorino has loved his time in Philadelphia, and he has hoped to make roots here.

It became possible in January when the Phillies’ center fielder signed a three-year, $22 million contract extension. It continued Monday, when Victorino announced at Citizens Bank Park that he had established the Shane Victorino Foundation to “promote opportunities for underserved youth in Philadelphia and Hawaii by engaging in projects which provide children with educational, recreational and wellness programs.”

The foundation kick-started things with a $900,000 pledge to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia to renovate its Nicetown facility, which was built in 1892.
